An important question for any artist is: How can I built a career and simultaneously be true to myself? This is an important question, and during the twenty years I taught writing, hundreds of students have expressed the belief that success and personal integrity are mutually exclusive.

Lifewriting approach to fiction suggests that not only those two qualities overlap, but that the safest, surest, most satisfying way of discovering your true voice, your deepest creative flow, and, ultimately, the development of the most satisfying career, is to be faithful to You. It suggests that Aristotle's famous debate on the relative merits of plot and character is a trick: Plot and character are two sides of one coin. Character is best revealed through action. And plot is merely what happens when a person engages in a specific situation. It is not only possible but desirable to move back and forth between those perspectives, seeking to create a homogeneous whole.

How do you personally define the characters? You MUST have a theory or sense of the human condition, or you have nothing to write. The best and easiest to learn characterization is to study psychology. And the best psychological study is yourself. Why? Because you have more information about what makes you that you have done what nobody else tick.

What is this path requires honesty and the courage to look deeply into your own life, and certain types of organizing the various aspects of your personality and emotional history. Then you need a mechanism to help you apply them to your writing.

Beautiful model of the human condition is the 6000-year model in India, the "chakras" of yoga. Censement seven energy centers in and around the human body, they mirror Pyramid human needs. Both yogis and psychologists suggest that until the "lower" more basic needs are met, one can not move to the next stage of life.

Chakras represent survival, sexuality, power, emotion, communication, intelligence, and spirit. Let's take a look at how each of these "levels" can be used to connect your emotional inner world, and your writing.

1) The survival. What are your deepest fears? Remember that fear underlies most anger, and fear was inside-out inspires most comedy. What horrible comic or you can use your own fears most secret? Creating characters with the same concerns and needs. I promise you: many of your readers have the same problems. Die Hard and a hundred other films per year punch this button. We are afraid of dying, disfigurement, abandonment, old age, disease and the survival of all values. All sources superb history.

2) Sexuality. Whether you turn? Sexuality can be an important aspect of the life of your character. What was your first experiences? Better? Worse / latest? Less ethical? At what point do you think you started having sex mature? When do you think sexuality is appropriate or not? What people in your experience have been uplifted, healed, damaged or degrading in their sexual interaction? Each of them is a character, and an opportunity for you to express your opinions and philosophies. The film A story of sexual violence used brilliantly to help us understand the relationship between the powerful conduit.

3) Power. What is your physical condition? What does this mean for your actions, values and priorities? Craft characters with distinct physical attributes, and allow the stories of their lives to express itself in their movement and appearance. Rocky Million Dollar Baby or use dynamic training fight scenes and to express the depths of passion and despair. While physical power is the most basic form, this evolves into financial and political power of any form of self-control, family or others. Explore your own attitudes toward these kinds of power, and begin to craft characters who breathe.

4) Love. What is love? Couple affection, as opposed to immature "puppy love"? Love for his children and family. The love for the country? For the whole of humanity? What is the difference between love and sexual attraction? What is the price you pay to see people from their heart space connections? What are the main advantages and disadvantages of human contact? Forrest Gump is about a man with a beautiful and loving heart… mind of a child. His life is better than almost everyone he meets, in spite of their advantages.

5) Communication. What is your belief about education and perception? What is our obligation to communicate with clarity and honesty? What kind of mischief is caused by a miscommunication? The verbal communication is better, more immediate and more honest than nonverbal? In Billy Budd, an inarticulate character strikes death of a man, largely due to the failure of communication.

6) Intelligence. What are your intellectual strengths? Weaknesses? When did you change your view of the world because the reality did not match your theories and beliefs? Creator with Peter O'Toole tells of a brilliant scientist, an intellectual trapped in the prison, unable to cope with the death of his beautiful wife. Previously. It must either change the map of the world, or his heart will die.

7) Spirit. What are your spiritual beliefs? Are you an atheist? Agnostic? Buddhist? Christian? What do you see as the spiritual and philosophical differences? If you do not use labels, could create characters of each type, and demonstrate the differences? If so, why? If not, why? Have you ever had a crisis of faith? Never felt a prayer was answered? This happened in a way you expected, or otherwise? Gandhi dealt with a man of great spiritual commitment that has found the strength to loosen the grip of the greatest empire the world has ever seen.

Once you have thought through each of these levels as they apply to your own life, you are now able to create characters uncommon complexity and depth. And you have made a big step toward the liberation of your true potential… writing if your intent is artistic, commercial, or, more wisely, at the same time.
